What is Couples Counselling?

Couples counselling offers a space for both partners to come together and explore what is happening within the relationship in a safe, supportive, and structured way.

You may be experiencing ongoing conflict, feeling disconnected, struggling to communicate, or noticing the same patterns repeating. At times, it can feel difficult to talk openly with one another without things becoming tense, leading to misunderstandings, or resulting in one or both of you shutting down.

In our work together, I provide a space where both of you feel heard and understood, without blame or judgement. My role is to remain neutral, supporting each of you to express your thoughts and feelings, while helping you to listen to one another in a different way.

The relationship itself is at the centre of the work. Whether you are hoping to make changes and move forward together or have reached a point where you may be considering separation, I will support you in understanding one another and navigating this in a way that feels respectful and considered.

We will explore not only what is happening in the relationship now, but also how past experiences, individual needs, and ways of communicating may be influencing things. This allows for a deeper understanding of one another and creates the opportunity for meaningful change.
Couples counselling is open to all types of relationships, including those who are married, in civil partnerships, or in committed relationships, regardless of sexual orientation.

Couples counselling is not about deciding who is right or wrong—it’s about understanding, connection, and finding a way forward that feels right for you both.

How can Counselling Help our Relationship?

Couples counselling can help you to better understand both yourself and each other, and how you relate within your relationship. It can support you in improving communication, particularly if conversations often lead to conflict, misunderstanding, or withdrawal. Over time, you may begin to recognise patterns within your relationship, understand what may be sitting beneath them, and find new ways of responding to one another.

For some couples, the work focuses on rebuilding connection, trust, or intimacy. For others, it may be about navigating differences—such as communication styles, emotional needs, or ways of experiencing the world—which can sometimes feel difficult to manage without support. I work with couples who are neurotypical, neurodivergent or a mix of both. Where there are differences in how each partner thinks, feels, or communicates, I support you in making sense of these in a way that feels respectful, balanced, and supportive for you both.

Couples counselling can also offer a space to work through significant life events, make decisions about the future of your relationship, or reach a shared understanding that feels clear and mutual.

The focus throughout is on supporting you both to feel heard, understood, and better equipped to move forward—whether that is together, or separately in a way that feels thoughtful and respectful.

Couples Intensive

For some couples, weekly sessions may feel too slow, or it may be difficult to find the time to attend regularly. A Couples Intensive offers a more focused and immersive way of working together.

This approach involves longer sessions over a shorter period of time, allowing us to explore your relationship in greater depth without the gaps that can come with weekly therapy. It can be particularly helpful if you are feeling stuck, navigating a significant challenge, or wanting to make more immediate progress.

The Couples Intensive is an alternative to traditional 50-minute sessions and is typically structured as two half-day sessions, spaced two weeks apart.

The first session focuses on gaining a deeper understanding of your relationship, exploring patterns, communication, and underlying dynamics. Together, we will begin to identify helpful ways forward, offering insight into what may be happening beneath the surface.

Between sessions, you will have time to reflect on what we have explored and begin to notice what feels different, with the opportunity to gently implement any ideas or changes that feel manageable for you.

The second session builds on this work, providing space to reflect on what has shifted, what may still feel challenging, and to continue developing new ways of communicating and relating. With the continuity this approach offers, we are able to go deeper into the work, supporting greater insight, emotional processing, and the potential for more lasting change.

A Couples Intensive may be particularly helpful if you are:

•     Experiencing ongoing day-to-day challenges within your relationship
•     Adjusting to life changes, such as becoming parents
•     Navigating life following a neurodivergent diagnosis or new understanding
•     Moving through a period of transition or uncertainty
•     Looking for a more focused and immediate approach to support

As with all of my work, the focus remains on creating a balanced, supportive, and non-judgemental space where both partners feel heard, respected, and able to engage in the process at a pace that feels right for you.

We were able to open up without any judgement and expertly guided the conversation to focus on the difficult issues without it feeling unnecessarily uncomfortable. Your honesty and guidance was very much appreciated.
